From the first gathering of the Spring, 2007, Greater Tucson Leadership Adult Program,
Paul Edwards stood out as the “nice” guy. He was the quiet one, with an easy smile
and easy conversation.
Paul gave you his full attention with every encounter, and
he never rushed a conversation or pushed an agenda. Paul never talked about himself
or his accomplishments. He told us about his recurring melanoma only because he
needed to miss a few classes for treatment, and he wanted us to know that he was
only missing because he didn’t have a choice in the matter. Even though he was obviously
uncomfortable and not feeling well during treatment, he would still come to class.
He never complained, and only discussed his illness if he was asked. When he could
no longer drive, he took a bus to class. He didn’t want to “bother” anyone by asking
for a ride. Paul portrayed a sense of strength and determination when discussing
his illness, and he was always appreciative of inquiries concerning his wellbeing.
Paul will be remembered by his classmates as the quiet leader, who was always a
gentleman with a gentle spirit. He was a humble man, and someone who immediately
put you at ease. He had a passion for life, his family and friends, good design
and the Sonoran desert. A recipient of the Paul Edwards Leadership Award will be
selected from each Adult Leadership Class.
